European Hake | Bakaliaros: Favourite Greek Fish Dishes

European Hake | Bakaliaros: Favourite Greek Fish Dishes

If you visit Thessaloniki and pass from the famous area called Ladadika, very close to the port of Thessaloniki, you will be able to try a uniquely cooked European Hake (in greek called Bakaliaros). The dishes’ first appearance will remind you of the British fish and chips but the taste is quite different. At least for those who like fish and have the opportunity to eat many different kinds they will feel the difference.
Inside a short and narrow street in Ladadika you will find a number of small restaurants that cook the European Hake (the most famous is called “Ta Bakaliarakia tou Aristou”). This restaurant is offering exclusively only this fish fried in very strong fire and served on a parchment paper and not on a dish. If you eat the european hake there it will look just like in the attached picture and will be accompanied by fresh fried fries. The lovers of this dish accompany it also with a salad called “politiki salata” (with main ingredients cabbage, carrot and celery) and also chili green pepper. For drink we propose you to select a beer or ouzo.

This meal is a registered trademark of Thessaloniki and many Greeks who live in other parts of Greece always choose to try it when passing from Thessaloniki.
