Museum of Ancient Greek, Byzantine & Post Byzantine Instruments

The Museum of Ancient Greek, Byzantine and Post Byzantine Instruments is located close to the port’s 1st Deck inside the Laladika area. It was founded in 1997 and it is housed in a restored three floor building. Its mission is to present to the public musical instruments which existed between 2800BC and the beginning of the 20th century. Most of its exhibits are instruments that were recreated with the help of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki using historical sources like pictures, literary descriptions to illustrate them accurate. Close to every exhibit the visitor will also find the related sources on which the University was based to recreate the instruments. The museum is ideal for the music lovers and for some instruments the visitors can also hear the sound they make. Apart from these, the museum is having also an educational mission and on this basis it is hosting a music related library, electronic archives and a musicology department.
