Mussels | Midia : Greek seafood recipes

Mussels (in Greek they are called ‘midia’) … there are no moderate conditions with mussels. Either you love them or you cannot even eat them. The mussels are also known for its aphrodisiac properties .. I do not know whether this is true because I do not remember having this symptoms after eating them.. Lol.. You might have though.. who knows…

The recipe shown in the photography however is called in Greek ‘midia saganaki’. It is made with essential ingredients thick tomato sauce and feta cheese. The mussels are also famous in other recipe variations (white sauce and feta cheese or even just fried). From these three recipe variations my favorite one is the last one and I always add fresh lemon juice on top. It just cannot be without it.. It is a matter of taste…

If you like mussels, however, and come to Greece, I suggest you to try the recipe with red sauce. It will be difficult to find this dish in a restaurant abroad due to the feta cheese. The shells are not always included in the recipe. They do not play a special role in the dishes taste but they disclose the fact that the mussels are fresh and not frozen.
