Athonos, is located at the east side of Aristotelous square just below Egnatia Street (see point 6 in the bellow map). It is an area which is popular among tourists due to its taverns and the live greek music they provide. The food served in Athonos is not having the standards of the quality restaurants but it is relatively good for its price. There the traveler can find what the greeks like to eat in taverns. Dishes with meat, fish, seafood and many Greek starters, plus tzatziki, souvlaki, gyros, ouzo and many different salads are some of the most common dishes served. The place has its name from the square that is located at its west side. Around the square and inside the athonos area the traveler can also find small family owned shops with handicrafts and almost home made food products, herbs etc. It is an area visited by the Thessalonians who want to find very distinct products as the old shops sell products that it is difficult to be found in the city’s commercial streets. The place is very busy during launch time and it stays busy until late in the night. Close to it the traveler can also find souvenir shops. If you have time to spend in Thessaloniki walk around athonos just to get a taste of its atmosphere.
