The Thessaloniki Historical Center is located in front of the Hippodrome Square. It is a research institute which was founded in 1983 and has been housed since 1995 in the building which is located until today. The Historical center is a service of the municipality of Thessaloniki and its purpose and mission is to investigate the history of Thessaloniki, acquire, maintain and classify and showcase material related with its history. It is overseen by an advisory committee which includes university professors, Thessaloniki writers, journalists and aldermen. Inside the building the visitor can also find a related topic library which is though not a lending library. An other activity which runs by the Historical Center of Thessaloniki is to organize events including exhibitions of historical documents, lectures and conferences in order to make Thessaloniki’s History known to more people and promote the scientific contribution of the city’s history. Through its historical archive the center provides to the public a valuable source of information that keeps the city connected to its past since the beginning of the 20th century and until today.
